BHP PERFORMANCE SHOW 2010

Car photography at Lydden motor sports circuit in Kent
03/05/10
Bank holiday Monday, and the promise of sunshine is short lived as a series of heavy showers persists early morning. Apart from a few trackdays recently I havent covered much motor sport photography so it was good to be back in the fold today for the bhp show at lydden race circuit in Kent. If the early morning queues were anything to go by this was going to be a well attended event. After picking up my press tabard and meeting up with some familiar faces I went in to the centre of the circuit. Lydden isn't a large circuit and being in a dip means that you pretty much have a view all around the circuit. The format for the day was a series of drifting and rally car displays with the additional track time going to anyone who fancied their chances in their own cars, has to be said that their were some serious cars our on the track. The drifting was a great spectacle to see with some serious driving skills on hand. I used a panning technique to keep the cars sharp and with a relatively slow shutter speed of 1/125 this created a blurred background, further enhancing the motion of the cars. For the majority i used the 1D III with the 70-200, no extender needed as the circuit is well contained and you are pretty much on top of the action, I also took a few with the fisheye to give a slightly different take on the tightly cropped action shots. It was good to see Steve baker from the canterbury photography club on the other side of the circuit taking some photos as well. Finished off just after 3.30 to beat the traffic and grab some food and drink, plus the cold wind and rain had taken it's toll!
